Ghana Dominates 2024 WAEC International Excellence Awards

David Nii Commey Ankrah, Henschel Tabi Frempong-Manso, and Benedict Ofori Debrah, hailing from Ghana, have been recognized as recipients of the WAEC International Excellence Award.

The trio of male candidates was chosen from among 2,455,063 individuals who took part in the exam across The Gambia, Ghana, Liberia, Nigeria, and Sierra Leone. These students demonstrated exceptional performance in the West African Senior Secondary School Certificate Examination (WASSCE) for school candidates.

The honours were bestowed upon them during the recently held 73rd Annual Council Meeting of The West African Examinations Council (WAEC). This meeting took place from Monday, March 17th, through Friday, March 21st, in Monrovia, Liberia.

During the gathering that resulted in Liberia’s selection of the Chief Government Nominee on Council, Honorable Amos Armah Fully was appointed Vice Chairman for a year-long term. Meanwhile, Master David Nii Commey Ankrah, who won the prestigious Augustus Bandele Oyediran Award as the top candidate in West Africa, stood out as the leading individual.

Ankrah, who is currently an undergraduate Pharmacy student at the University of Cape Coast in Ghana, achieved an A1 grade in several subjects.

In the second place is Master Henschel Tabi Frempong-Manso.

Currently enrolled at the esteemed Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology in Ghana, Frempong-Manso aims to become a distinguished engineer. He achieved outstanding grades, earning an A1 in eight subjects.

In third place, Master Benedict Ofori Debrah is presently enrolled at the Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology in Ghana, with ambitions to become a prominent surgeon.

He achieved A1 grades in eight subjects, securing the third position.

During his keynote speech, His Excellency Joseph Nyumah Boakai, the President of Liberia, celebrated WAEC’s 73rd anniversary and highlighted how the council’s progress reflects the strength of educational frameworks within the region along with the dedication of teachers who foster future leadership.

He pointed out that WAEC has been leading the way in educational evaluation across West Africa for over fifty years, guaranteeing that students get valid and uniform tests.

He mentioned that the Council has performed admirably in establishing a structure that promotes transparency, accountability, and fairness when evaluating academic accomplishments throughout the area.

The President highlighted that WAEC has played a crucial role in establishing a unified curriculum, maintaining high standards of education, and fostering regional cohesion. They emphasized the necessity for WAEC to acknowledge the critical nature of developing assessment methods and policies that include all students.

He went on to say that it is crucial for the Council to create test settings that accommodate students with disabilities, guaranteeing that these students have fair chances to demonstrate their abilities and obtain the credentials they merit.

During her address, Honorable Dr. Jarso Maley Jallah, the Minister of Education for Liberia, highlighted that the Annual Council Meeting "gathers important participants from WAEC member nations to tackle significant matters impacting the development and management of the Council’s exams."

As she stated, Liberia continues to be dedicated to enhancing cooperation between WAEC and the individual member states.

She emphasized, "While discussing issues that will mold the educational landscape of West Africa, let us strengthen our commitment to upholding the integrity, availability, and efficiency of WAEC’s exams."
