Court Blocks Recall Effort for Natasha, Orders INEC to Halt Moves (International Edition)

The Federal High Court located in Lokoja, Kogi State, has issued an injunction preventing the Independent National Electoral Commission from accepting or processing any petitions aimed at recalling the suspended Senator for Kogi Central, Natasha Akpoti-Uduaghan.

Akpoti-Uduaghan, who faced suspension due to misconduct after alleging that the Senate President, Godswill Akpabio, engaged in sexual harassment, has recently encountered recall threats from her constituency over the past several days.

The movement to recall the legislator gained momentum on Thursday as additional organizations within her electoral district joined forces to support the initiative.

Some of her constituents filed an urgent motion at the Federal High Court seeking an interim injunction through an exparte application, backed by an affidavit emphasizing immediate action. The documents were submitted alongside various legal filings affirmed by Anebe Jacob Ogirima on behalf of himself and four additional registered voters from Kogi Central Senatorial District.

The application was submitted by Smart Nwachimere, Esq from West-Idahosa, SAN & Co.

Following this, Justice Anyalewa Onoja-Alapa acceded to the requests made by the plaintiffs, stating, "A temporary injunction is issued, prohibiting the defendant, along with their employees, representatives, associates, or successors, from processing, acknowledging, or taking any action related to any alleged submissions presented to them by individuals containing fabricated signatures and member names of the mentioned district. This includes halting all referendums aimed at initiating a recall procedure against Senator Natasha Akpoti-Uduaghan until the resolution of the current petition."

The duly recorded sequence from this esteemed tribunal together with the Notice of Motion should be delivered to the respondent/defendant until the main case has been resolved. The response date will be set for May 6th, 2025, intended for confirming service completion and scheduling additional hearings.

The hearing was postponed until May 6, 2025, for a service report and additional discussion.
