Even though many feel the world is getting colder and more difficult, a recent study indicates that compassion continues to be a significant wellspring of joy around the planet.
Each year, on the occasion of the International Day of Happiness, the World Happiness Report offers an overview of global happiness levels and overall well-being. This annual publication is jointly created by Gallup, the University of Oxford’s Wellbeing Research Centre, along with the UN Sustainable Development Solutions Network.
This year's event highlights deeds of kindness and how individuals view their neighborhoods. The study groups these actions into three main types: financial contributions, voluntary service, and performing considerate acts for those they do not know.
According to worldwide statistics presented in the report, 70 percent of the global populace engaged in at least one charitable action over the last four weeks.
That's an exceptionally high figure," stated Dr. Felix Cheung, who co-authored the report and serves as an assistant professor of psychology at the University of Toronto and holds the Canada Research Chair in Population Well-Being. "Just considering this statistic makes one feel quite positive. Out of every ten individuals nearby, seven have performed some kind deed within the last month.
Even though the frequency of kind acts has decreased somewhat since reaching its apex during the pandemic, it is still above what it was before COVID-19.
Nigeria absent from the list of the globe's top 100 happiest nations in 2025 Can one find the formula for genuine joy? Instances when acts of kindness lead to unexpected outcomes"Despite feeling that the world is quite challenging at present, it's heartening to see individuals performing thoughtful and charitable deeds," stated Dr. Lara Aknin, a social psychology professor at Simon Fraser University in British Columbia and an editor of the World Happiness Report.
As reported by CNN, research indicates that there is strong proof suggesting these good deeds do more than just elevate the spirits of those who receive them; they also enhance the well-being of individuals carrying out the kind actions.
Ilana Ron-Levey, a managing director of the public sector at Gallup, pointed out that benevolence could play a crucial role in reversing the ongoing decline in happiness in countries like the United States.
"Generous acts correlate more closely with happiness than receiving a higher income," she stated.
The report suggests that minor actions like making a donation or spending an hour volunteering can significantly influence one’s well-being, thereby disputing the belief that only substantial life changes or monetary rewards lead to happiness.
